The nature of the building project has not yet been decided as we are waiting for suitable projects to be requested by villagers via Community Action Nepal. The actual village and type of building required should be decided by November 2009.
Education
Education in the remote villages in Nepal is often hampered by poor buildings and few resources. Children may walk for many hours a day to reach a school that may be little more than an simple building with earth floors, no sanitation and planks of wood to sit on. Windows may have no glass in them and a lack of heating and even a light bulb makes learning in the winter months even more difficult. All this coupled with the need for children to work in the fields means that only 51% of children finish even primary school.
Health
Health services are often more remote to villagers than schools – the nearest clinic may be a day’s walk away and may then only be staffed by a health assistant with limited medical training. A health post in a village with a trained nurse can make all the difference especially in terms of maternal care and child health.
• Nepal is the 12th poorest country in the world
• Average annual income is £120 per head
• 50% of the population cannot read or write
• Life expectancy is 58
• 10% of children die before they are 5
• 13% of births are attended by a skilled health worker and mothers are 150 times more likely to die in childbirth than in the UK
• 20% have no access to clean water
• In some villages enteritis from unclean water kills 50% of the children under 5
• 80% have no access to toilet facilities of any sort
There are two different ways to go on Project Nepal in 2010.
To give participants the most flexibility we have put together two options - one for 15 days and the other for 22 days. This is as a result of feedback from Project Nepal 1. Many people who wanted to go were unable to go for three weeks. The trips will be basically the same except the longer one will spend more time working on the project in the village.
