What is Project Nepal 2?
Project Nepal 2 will bring together a group of 35 adults who will travel to the remote Himalayan village of Purano Duwar to build some much needed classrooms at the village school.
We will work in close partnership with the village and the charity Community Action Nepal (CAN).

Who are the Team?
We are 35 adults  for all over West Yorkshire involved with West Yorkshire Scouts. We range in age from 18 to 69 and come from all walks of life. Three of the Team are skilled tradesmen and the rest of us are learning the building skills required on our Training Weekends. Several of the Team are veterans of Project Nepal 1.

What are the Team committed to?
Project Nepal is divided into  2 main components:
To spend 2 or 3 weeks in Nepal in November 2010 completing the building project in the village.
To spend 12 days at Bradley Wood over 2009 / 2010 undertaking Training.
Who are CAN?
Community Action Nepal is a registered UK charity, based in Kathmandu, founded by mountaineer Doug Scott. It operates in the middle hill regions of Nepal supporting remote communities through Education, Health and Community Development programmes. These regions are at an altitude of between 2000m and 4000m and the people are amongst the poorest in Nepal receiving least benefit from tourism. CAN actively encourages local participation - villagers are asked to suggest projects, contribute work and skills and raise around 30% of the total cost. For further information see the CAN web site at http://www.canepal.org.uk/

How will the Team be living in the village?
Whilst in the village we will be camping. Sleeping tents with foam mattresses, toilet tents and dining tents will be provided as well as hot water shower tents. We will be supported by Nepalese cooks who will provide all the food using locally produced ingredients. Nepalese food can be hot and spicy with many vegetarian dishes. Boiled drinking water will be available.

Why are we going in November?
November is one of the best times to visit Nepal. After the monsoon the skies are clear and the visibility is at its best. Below 4000m it is still warm with daytime temperatures in the region of 15-25°C though these progressively decrease with increasing altitude. Above 4000m night temperatures can drop to -15°C by November

What about the political situation in Nepal?
Nepal has had internal political unrest for many years. Three years ago the Maoists were elected to power but this has not changed the level of stability. There has not been any recorded harm or threat to Western tourists as they acknowledge the value of tourism to the economy.

What is the Bradley Wood training?
As an integral part of the training for the building project in Nepal we are committed to spend 6 weekends or 12 days at Bradley Wood (from a list of 16 dates) undertaking similar building work to that in Nepal.

What is happening about fundraising?
The cost of the classrooms in Nepal is just over £13,000. The village will contribute 30% of the project in the form of labour to clear and level the land, dig the foundations and source the timber and stone.
We are actively fundraising to cover the full cost of the building project plus raising funds to pay for our own personal costs to cover flights, accommodation and food in Nepal. We are running a variety of  fundraising events and writing to Trust and Foundations asking  for support.
