• 50% of the population cannot read or write
• Life expectancy is 58
• 10% of children die before they are 5
• 13% of births are attended by a skilled health worker and mothers are 150 times more likely to die in childbirth than in the UK
• 20% have no access to clean water
• In some villages enteritis from unclean water kills 50% of the children under 5
• 80% have no access to toilet facilities of any sort
